First Things Portraits

This is an important time in your life worth capturing in a portrait. The best portrait is a portrait that looks natural. "That Look" is achieved when you're wearing and doing the things that look and feel natural for you. That smile, that attitude, those eyes, that hair, YOU! The background, the props and the outfit are secondary…they're intended to compliment and help to achieve "That Look".

Before your scheduled portrait sitting take the time to figure out just what kind of portrait you want. That way you will be able to clearly communicate the look and feel you're wanting. Read the helpful tips below:

Capturing YOU! - Think about your style

  • Are you most comfortable in jeans and a shirt, dockers and a polo, skirt and heels, letterman jacket, slacks and sweater or something different altogether?
  • Gather portraits you think look really great. What is it you like about them? Consider if that look is "you". Bring in the sample portraits you really like at your sitting. Tell us what you like about them.
  • Decide what type of portrait you want.
    1. Formal or casual?
    2. Outdoor setting or studio?
    3. Black and white, color or sepia?
    4. Soft lights and shadows or even bright lighting with soft shadows?
    5. Backgrounds: Plain paper, drapes, muslin?
  • Props and enhancement - Remember props make wonderful portraits for home and family, but are frequently forbidden in the local school annual submissions. Given that, we are happy to take your portraits with your car, animal (no exotics), sports equipment, instrument, etc. This portrait will be separate from the one you choose for your annual portrait submission.
